Accessibility Statement
Uncommitted University · Effective Date: August 1, 2026 · Last Updated: August 1, 2026
Our Commitment
Uncommitted University is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities have full and equal enjoyment of our website, our application, and every service we offer. Recruiting is hard enough. It should not be harder because of how someone reads a page, moves a cursor, or hears audio.
This is an ongoing programme, not a finished state, and this statement describes honestly where we are, including what does not yet work.
Scope. This statement covers uncommittedu.com (our marketing site and recruiting guides) and app.uncommittedu.com (our web application), together with the legal documents and account flows inside them.
Why This Statement Sits Alongside Our Legal Documents
Accessibility is not a separate compliance track from privacy and contract. It is the foundation underneath them.
If a visually impaired athlete or parent cannot read our Terms of Service with a screen reader, then their agreement to those Terms is not informed consent, and an agreement obtained that way is vulnerable. The same applies to every privacy choice we ask someone to make. A consent checkbox that cannot be reached by keyboard is not consent.
We therefore treat our legal hub (Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, Security Framework, Strategic Framework, and this statement) as accessibility-critical infrastructure. These documents are built as structured text with real headings, genuine links, and no content locked inside images. Where we ask you to agree to something, the control is a standard, labelled, keyboard-reachable form element.
Conformance Status
We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. WCAG 2.1 AA is the standard courts, the Department of Justice, and settlement agreements consistently point to, and naming it removes ambiguity about what we hold ourselves to.
We are currently partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means some parts of our content do not yet fully meet the standard. We have not completed an independent third-party accessibility audit, and we do not claim full conformance.
We state this plainly rather than asserting a conformance level we have not verified. An unverified conformance claim helps nobody who actually needs the site to work, and it is precisely the representation that turns an accessibility complaint into a deception claim.
We Do Not Use an Accessibility Overlay
UU does not use an accessibility overlay, widget, or automated remediation plugin, and we will not add one.
These tools are marketed as instant compliance. In practice they frequently fail on exactly the content that matters here (custom video players, interactive dashboards, complex tables) and they routinely interfere with the screen readers that people already use and have configured. Courts have repeatedly ordered organisations to remediate underlying code rather than accepting an overlay as a remedy.
We fix the code. It is slower and it is the only thing that actually works.
Legal Framework
This statement is provided in the spirit of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable state civil-rights statutes including the California Unruh Civil Rights Act.
We are aware that federal courts are divided on whether a website is itself a "place of public accommodation," and that the answer can depend on where a claim is filed. We do not rely on that division, and we will not use it as a shield.
UU serves athletes, parents, and coaches across the entire United States, including jurisdictions whose courts apply the ADA to digital services regardless of any physical premises. We therefore proceed on the basis that our obligations apply, and we do not intend to argue otherwise. Our commitment here does not depend on which circuit a question is asked in; and more to the point, an athlete who cannot use the site is not helped by a jurisdictional argument.
Known Limitations
The following areas fall short today. This list is not exhaustive, and we update it as we find and fix issues.
| Area | Limitation | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Skip navigation | Our pages do not currently provide a "skip to main content" link, which makes keyboard and screen-reader navigation slower on pages with long menus. This is a WCAG 2.1 Level A requirement (2.4.1 Bypass Blocks). | Known gap: prioritised |
| Independent audit | No third-party accessibility audit and no usability testing with assistive-technology users has yet been carried out. | Roadmap |
| Third-party components | Parts of our marketing site use a commercial theme and third-party plugins whose markup we do not fully control. Some may not meet Level AA. | Under review |
| Embedded video | Highlight videos are hosted by third parties. Captions depend on what the athlete or the host provided. We cannot guarantee captioning on media we did not create. | Partial |
| Athlete-supplied content | Profile text, images, and media come from athletes. We cannot guarantee that descriptions they supply meet the standard. | Ongoing |
| Complex data tables | Some directory and comparison tables are dense and may be difficult to navigate with a screen reader. | Under review |
What Works Today
Verified as in place:
- Pages declare a language, so screen readers pronounce content correctly
- Images in our published content carry descriptive alternative text
- Content uses a structured heading hierarchy that supports navigation by headings
- The site is responsive and remains usable when zoomed; text reflows rather than forcing horizontal scrolling
- Forms use standard, labelled, keyboard-reachable controls
- Our legal documents are structured text, not images, with working in-page anchors
- No auto-playing audio, and no flashing content capable of triggering seizures
Third-Party and User-Generated Content
UU hosts content created by other people (athlete profiles, uploaded photographs, and highlight video hosted on third-party platforms) and integrates services we do not operate.
We strive for accessibility across everything we present, but we do not exercise editorial or technical control over content supplied by users or delivered by third-party integrations. We encourage athletes to provide descriptive text for what they upload, and we prefer partners and vendors who meet WCAG standards.
This is a statement of control, not an abdication. If third-party or user-generated content is blocking you, tell us and Section Feedback applies in full: we will get you the information another way.
Assessment Methodology
Our current position is based on internal self-evaluation: review of our own markup together with automated checking. It has not been validated by an external auditor or by testing with people who use assistive technology daily.
We recognise that automated scanning alone is insufficient: it reliably detects only a minority of real barriers, and it cannot judge whether something is actually usable.
Our committed methodology going forward combines:
- Automated scanning integrated into our development process, to catch regressions early
- Manual keyboard and screen-reader testing of core journeys: sign-up, profile creation, outreach, checkout, and the legal hub
- Testing with people who rely on assistive technology, whose judgement governs where it differs from an automated result
- Re-testing after material changes, rather than treating accessibility as a one-time project
Roadmap: an independent audit against WCAG 2.1 Level AA and assistive-technology user testing. We are not promising a date; we will update this statement when it is done.
Feedback, and How to Get Help
If any part of UU is not accessible to you, tell us. We will fix it, and in the meantime we will get you what you need another way.
Email: support@uncommittedu.com
Please include the page address, what you were trying to do, and, only if you are comfortable sharing it, the assistive technology you were using.
Our commitments when you contact us:
- We aim to acknowledge within 2 business days and respond substantively within 10 business days
- If something on the site blocks you, we will provide the information or complete the task for you by another means (email, telephone, or direct assistance) while we work on the underlying fix. You should never have to wait for an engineering change to use a service you paid for.
- We will arrange a telephone call at a time that suits you if that is easier than writing; ask and we will call you
- We treat accessibility reports as defects, not feature requests
- Reporting a barrier will never affect your account, your access, or your price
If you are not satisfied with our response, reply and ask for it to be escalated to the site owner directly. Nothing in this statement limits any right you have under applicable disability or accessibility law.
Compatibility
The Service is designed to work with current versions of major browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge) on desktop and mobile, together with the screen readers commonly paired with them. It may not work reliably with browsers more than two major versions old.
Technical Specifications
Accessibility relies on HTML, WAI-ARIA, CSS, and JavaScript, and on the combination of browser and assistive technology installed on your device.
Review
This statement is reviewed when the Service changes materially, and updated as limitations are resolved or discovered. It is linked from the footer of every page.
