is not toughness. It is math.
Lose 2 percent of your body weight in sweat and your bat speed, your command and your decision making all drop before you feel thirsty. That is 3 pounds on a 150 pound player. This page gives you the three numbers that fix it, and the exact mixes we buy.
Everything here runs on this page. No sign up, no email, nothing to download.
Why baseball players get this wrong
Baseball does not feel like a running sport, so nobody drinks like it is one. Then a doubleheader in August finds everybody out.

Tool 1. Sweat rate calculator, measured once
Sweat rates differ by more than double between two players on the same field, in the same weather. Yours is a number you measure one time and then use all season.
Weigh yourself in shorts, dry, right before practice. Weigh again right after, toweled off. Track what you drank in between. That is the whole test.
Sweat rate calculator
The salty sweat setting uses the published research range, roughly 460 to 1,840 mg of sodium per litre of sweat, with about 950 mg as the middle. The white crust on a dark shirt is the cheapest test there is.
How much water should a baseball player drink a day
About half your body weight in ounces on a normal day, then 16 to 20 ounces more for every pound you lose at practice or a game. A 160 pound player is at 80 ounces before the first pitch and closer to 120 on a game day.
Sports dietitians give the same range: 80 to 120 ounces a day for most athletes, more in heat. The number only means something once you know your sweat rate, so run Tool 1 first.
Tool 2. Your game day hydration timeline
Knowing your sweat rate is useless if you start drinking in the third inning. Put in first pitch and this prints the clock times, so you can set the alarms on your phone once.
Game day hydration timeline
| Clock | What | Why |
|---|
Built from the NFHS schedule: 16 oz two hours out, another 8 to 16 oz fifteen minutes out, then 4 to 8 oz every 15 to 20 minutes of play. Hot days and doubleheaders scale it up.
Print it, screenshot it, or set four alarms. The players who actually do this are the ones still hitting in the second game.
The check that costs nothing
You cannot weigh in at a showcase. You can look in the bowl. Urine color is the field test every athletic trainer uses because it needs no equipment at all.
Why not just grab a Gatorade
Sugar is not an electrolyte. It is fuel, and every mix on this page skips it on purpose.
Not a ban. An occasional Gatorade will not hurt anyone. It is just not the cramping fix the label makes it sound like.
What is actually in a good mix
“Electrolytes” means three minerals, not one. This is what to look for on the label, not the flavor on the front of the can.
Late-game cramping is rarely sodium alone. The mixes below that also carry real magnesium are marked in the table.
Best electrolyte powder for baseball players, sorted by sodium
Every mix on this page is zero sugar. The only thing that separates them is how much sodium, potassium and magnesium each serving carries, and that is the part the label buries.
Match the mix to your sweat test. A light sweater on a 60 degree day does not need a 1,000 mg packet, and a salty sweater catching a doubleheader is not getting fixed by 55 mg.

Salty sweater pick
LMNT Zero Sugar

Pills and chews, for when you cannot drink more

Zero sugar does not mean zero calories
A pitcher on a hot day burns through his stored fuel long before the seventh, and nobody replaces that with water and a salt tab. The fix is not sugar, it is real fast fuel, and pro pitchers already figured this out.

Five mistakes that cost games
When it stops being about performance
Stop and get help immediately
Exertional heat stroke is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes in this country, and almost all of it happens in the summer. Nobody plays through the list below.
- Confusion, slurred speech, staggering, or acting “off”
- Stops sweating, or skin that is hot and dry
- Vomiting, severe headache, or a body temperature that keeps climbing
- Fainting, or cannot stand up on their own
- Cramping that seizes whole muscle groups and will not release
Get the player out of the sun, get cold water on them, and get the athletic trainer or 911. Cooling starts before the ambulance arrives, not after.
Younger players acclimatise more slowly and are worse at spotting these signs in themselves. That is a coaching job and a parent job, not a player job.

Not medical advice. Every page in Player Development is education, built from the public guidance named on the page. It is not a diagnosis and it is not a prescription. Talk to your doctor, your athletic trainer or a registered dietitian before you change how you eat, train or sleep, or add any supplement, and check your league and school rules on supplements first. Pain that does not leave, sleep that will not come, or a game that ends in dizziness or cramping is a doctor or athletic trainer conversation, not a calculator.
