There is a cost to the new model. A 34-man cap is smaller than the 40-man rosters many programs carried, so the developmental walk-on spot that used to exist at the bottom of the roster has largely gone.

One wrinkle is worth knowing. Players who would have lost a spot purely because of the new cap could be flagged by their school as exempt from it, so some rosters legitimately ran past 34 during the changeover.

Ask whether a program is still carrying any of those exempt players before you read its roster number as the real number of college baseball scholarships available to you.
